1
Praise be to God, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and His is all praise in the Hereafter. He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
-
2
He knows what goes into the earth and what comes out of it, what comes down from the sky and what ascends into it. He is the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.
-
3
Those who disbelieve say, “The Hour will not come upon us.” Say, “Yes, by my Lord, it will surely come upon you — [by] the Knower of the unseen.” Not even the weight of an atom escapes Him in the heavens or on the earth, nor anything smaller than that or greater, except that it is in a clear Record,
-
4
so that He may reward those who believe and do righteous deeds. For them there is forgiveness and generous provision.
-
5
But those who strive against Our signs, seeking to defeat [them] — for them is a punishment of painful torment.
-
6
Those who have been given knowledge see that what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, and that it guides to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.
-
7
Those who disbelieve say, “Shall we show you a man who tells you that when you have been utterly torn to pieces, you will be [raised] in a new creation?
-
8
Has he invented a lie about God, or is he possessed?” No, those who do not believe in the Hereafter are in torment and far astray.
-
9
Have they not looked at what is before them and what is behind them of the sky and the earth? If We willed, We could make the earth swallow them or make fragments of the sky fall upon them. In that is surely a sign for every servant who turns [to God].
-
10
We gave David a favor from Us: “Mountains, echo [God’s praises] with him, and you birds too.” And We made iron soft for him,
-
11
[saying,] “Make full coats of mail and measure the links well. And do righteous deeds; I see all that you do.”
-
12
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind — its morning course was a month’s journey and its evening course a month’s journey. We made a spring of molten copper flow for him. And among the jinn were some who worked before him by the permission of his Lord; whoever of them deviated from Our command, We would make him taste the punishment of the Blaze.
-
13
They made for him whatever he wished: places of prayer, statues, basins like reservoirs, and cooking pots fixed firmly [in place]. “Work, family of David, in gratitude.” Few of My servants are truly grateful.
-
14
When We decreed his death, nothing showed them that he had died except a creature of the earth eating away at his staff. When he fell down, the jinn realized that had they known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating toil.
-
15
There was certainly a sign for Sheba in their homeland: two gardens, on the right and on the left. “Eat of your Lord’s provision and give thanks to Him — a good land and a Most Forgiving Lord.”
-
16
But they turned away, so We sent against them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two gardens with two gardens bearing bitter fruit, tamarisks, and a few lote trees.
-
17
That is how We repaid them for their ingratitude. And do We repay [thus] any but the ungrateful?
-
18
Between them and the towns We had blessed, We placed towns within sight of one another, and We set out the stages of travel between them: “Travel among them by night and by day in safety.”
-
19
But they said, “Our Lord, lengthen the distances between our journeys,” and they wronged themselves. So We made them [mere] tales and scattered them utterly. In that are surely signs for everyone who is patient and grateful.
-
20
Iblis certainly found his assumption about them to be true, for they followed him — all except a group of believers.
-
21
He had no authority over them, except that We might make known who believes in the Hereafter as distinct from who is in doubt about it. Your Lord is Guardian over all things.
-
22
Say, “Call upon those you claim [as gods] besides God. They do not possess even the weight of an atom in the heavens or on the earth, nor do they have any share in either, nor does He have any helper among them.”
-
23
No intercession will benefit with Him except for one whom He permits. Then, when the terror is lifted from their hearts, they will say, “What did your Lord say?” They will say, “The truth.” He is the Most High, the Most Great.
-
24
Say, “Who provides for you from the heavens and the earth?” Say, “God. And either we or you are rightly guided or in clear error.”
-
25
Say, “You will not be asked about the sins we committed, nor will we be asked about what you do.”
-
26
Say, “Our Lord will bring us together, then He will judge between us with truth. He is the Judge, the All-Knowing.”
-
27
Say, “Show me those you have joined with Him as partners. No! Rather, He is God, the Almighty, the All-Wise.”
-
28
We have sent you only to all people, as a bearer of good news and a warner, but most people do not know.
-
29
They say, “When will this promise be [fulfilled], if you are truthful?”
-
30
Say, “You have an appointment on a day which you can neither delay by a single hour nor bring forward.”
-
31
Those who disbelieve say, “We will never believe in this Quran, nor in what came before it.” If only you could see when the wrongdoers are made to stand before their Lord, casting blame back and forth at one another! Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, “Had it not been for you, we would have been believers.”
-
32
Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, “Was it we who turned you away from the guidance after it had come to you? No, you were guilty [yourselves].”
-
33
Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, “No, it was [your] scheming night and day, when you ordered us to disbelieve in God and to set up equals to Him.” They will conceal their remorse when they see the punishment, and We will put shackles on the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be repaid for anything but what they used to do?
-
34
We never sent a warner to any town without its affluent ones saying, “We reject what you have been sent with.”
-
35
They said, “We have more wealth and children, and we will not be punished.”
-
36
Say, “My Lord expands provision for whomever He wills and restricts it, but most people do not know.”
-
37
It is not your wealth or your children that bring you near to Us in rank, but only those who believe and do righteous deeds — for them there will be a double reward for what they did, and they will be secure in the lofty chambers.
-
38
But those who strive against Our signs, seeking to defeat [them], will be brought into the punishment.
-
39
Say, “My Lord expands provision for whomever He wills of His servants and restricts it for him. Whatever you spend of anything, He will replace it. He is the best of providers.”
-
40
On the day He gathers them all together, He will say to the angels, “Was it you these people used to worship?”
-
41
They will say, “Glory be to You! You are our Protector, not they. Rather, they used to worship the jinn; most of them believed in them.”
-
42
So today none of you has power to benefit or harm another. And We will say to those who did wrong, “Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny.”
-
43
When Our clear verses are recited to them, they say, “This is only a man who wants to turn you away from what your fathers used to worship.” And they say, “This is nothing but an invented falsehood.” And those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is nothing but clear sorcery.”
-
44
We had not given them any books to study, nor had We sent them any warner before you.
-
45
Those before them also denied, and these have not attained a tenth of what We gave them. They denied My messengers — how [terrible], then, was My rejection [of them]!
-
46
Say, “I advise you of only one thing: that you stand up for God, in pairs or individually, and then reflect. There is no madness in your companion. He is only a warner to you before a severe punishment.”
-
47
Say, “Whatever reward I might have asked of you, you may keep it. My reward is only with God, and He is witness over all things.”
-
48
Say, “My Lord hurls the truth [against falsehood]. He is the Knower of all that is unseen.”
-
49
Say, “The truth has come, and falsehood can neither originate nor restore [anything].”
-
50
Say, “If I go astray, I go astray only to my own loss; and if I am guided, it is by what my Lord reveals to me. He is All-Hearing, Ever Near.”
-
51
If only you could see when they are terrified, with no escape, and they are seized from a place nearby!
-
52
They will then say, “Now we believe in it” — but how could they ever reach [it] from so distant a place,
-
53
when they had disbelieved in it before, and used to hurl conjectures about the unseen from a place far away?
-
54
And they will be cut off from all they long for, just as happened to their kind earlier; they were lost in deep, unsettling doubt.
