1
Alif Lam Ra. [This is] a Book which We have sent down to you so that you may bring people out of the darkness into the light by their Lord's permission, to the path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy,
-
2
God, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe to the disbelievers from a severe punishment,
-
3
those who prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter, and turn [people] away from the path of God, and seek to make it crooked. They are far astray.
-
4
We have not sent any messenger except in the language of his own people, so that he might make [things] clear to them. Then God leaves astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. He is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
-
5
We sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring your people out of the darkness into the light, and remind them of the days of God." In that there are signs for everyone who is steadfast and grateful.
-
6
And when Moses said to his people, "Remember God's favour upon you when He saved you from Pharaoh's people, who were inflicting a terrible torment on you, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a great trial from your Lord.
-
7
And when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely give you more; but if you are ungrateful, My punishment is severe indeed.'"
-
8
Moses said, "If you disbelieve, you and everyone on earth together, God is free of all need, Praiseworthy."
-
9
Has the news not reached you of those before you, the people of Noah, Ad and Thamud, and those after them, whom none knows but God? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they put their hands to their mouths and said, "We disbelieve in what you have been sent with, and we are in disquieting doubt about what you are calling us to."
-
10
Their messengers said, "Is there any doubt about God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you so that He may forgive you your sins and grant you respite until an appointed term." They said, "You are only human beings like us. You want to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. So bring us some clear authority."
-
11
Their messengers said to them, "We are only human beings like you, but God bestows His favour on whom He wills of His servants. It is not for us to bring you any authority except by God's permission. In God let the believers put their trust.
-
12
Why should we not put our trust in God when He has guided us to our ways? We will surely bear patiently the harm you do us. In God let all who trust put their trust."
-
13
Those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." Then their Lord revealed to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers,
-
14
and We will surely settle you in the land after them. That is for whoever fears standing before Me and fears My warning."
-
15
And they sought victory, and every stubborn tyrant was brought to ruin.
-
16
Before him lies Hell, and he will be given to drink of festering water.
-
17
He will sip it but will hardly be able to swallow it. Death will come at him from every side, yet he will not die; and beyond that lies a harsh punishment.
-
18
The likeness of those who disbelieve in their Lord: their deeds are like ashes that the wind blows hard upon on a stormy day. They will have no power over anything of what they have earned. That is the far-reaching error.
-
19
Do you not see that God created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can remove you and bring a new creation.
-
20
And that is not difficult for God.
-
21
They will all appear before God, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "We were your followers, so can you avail us anything against God's punishment?" They will say, "Had God guided us, we would have guided you. It is the same for us whether we despair or endure patiently; there is no escape for us."
-
22
And Satan will say when the matter has been decided, "God promised you a true promise, and I promised you, but I failed you. I had no authority over you except that I called you and you responded to me. So do not blame me, but blame yourselves. I cannot rescue you, nor can you rescue me. I disown your associating me [with God] before. The wrongdoers will have a painful punishment."
-
23
But those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted into Gardens beneath which rivers flow, to abide there forever by their Lord's permission. Their greeting there will be "Peace."
-
24
Do you not see how God sets forth a parable? A good word is like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches are in the sky,
-
25
yielding its fruit at all times by its Lord's permission. God sets forth parables for people so that they may take heed.
-
26
And the likeness of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, having no stability.
-
27
God makes firm those who believe with the firm word in the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and God leaves the wrongdoers astray. God does whatever He wills.
-
28
Have you not seen those who exchanged God's favour for ingratitude and brought their people down into the home of ruin,
-
29
Hell, which they will burn in? What an evil place to settle!
-
30
They set up rivals to God to lead [people] astray from His path. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for your destination is the Fire."
-
31
Tell My servants who believe to keep up the prayer and to spend secretly and openly from what We have provided for them, before a Day comes in which there will be neither trading nor friendship.
-
32
It is God who created the heavens and the earth and sent down water from the sky, and with it brought forth fruits as provision for you. He has made ships subservient to you, to sail through the sea by His command, and He has made the rivers subservient to you.
-
33
He has made the sun and the moon subservient to you, both constantly on their courses, and He has made the night and the day subservient to you.
-
34
And He has given you some of everything you asked of Him. If you were to count God's favours, you could not number them. Man is truly unjust and ungrateful.
-
35
And when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city secure, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
-
36
My Lord, they have led many people astray. So whoever follows me is of me; and whoever disobeys me, You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
-
37
Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a valley without crops, near Your Sacred House, our Lord, so that they may keep up the prayer. So make the hearts of people incline towards them, and provide them with fruits so that they may be grateful.
-
38
Our Lord, You know what we hide as well as what we show. Not a thing in the earth or in the sky is concealed from God.
-
39
Praise be to God, who has granted me Ishmael and Isaac in my old age. My Lord is the Hearer of prayer.
-
40
My Lord, make me one who keeps up the prayer, and [also] from my offspring. Our Lord, accept my prayer.
-
41
Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers on the Day when the reckoning takes place."
-
42
Do not think that God is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only grants them respite until a Day when eyes will stare [in horror],
-
43
rushing forward, heads raised, their gaze not returning to them, and their hearts empty.
-
44
So warn people of the Day when the punishment will come to them, and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, grant us respite for a short while; we will respond to Your call and follow the messengers." [It will be said,] "Did you not swear before that there would be no passing away for you?
-
45
You dwelt in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it became clear to you how We dealt with them, and We set forth examples for you."
-
46
They devised their scheme, but their scheme is [known] to God, even if their scheme were such as to move mountains.
-
47
So do not think that God will fail His messengers in His promise. God is Almighty, Lord of retribution.
-
48
On the Day when the earth will be changed into another earth, and the heavens [as well], and they will appear before God, the One, the All-Conquering.
-
49
On that Day you will see the wrongdoers chained together in fetters,
-
50
their garments of tar, and the Fire covering their faces,
-
51
so that God may repay every soul for what it has earned. God is swift in reckoning.
-
52
This is a message for people, so that they may be warned by it, and know that He is only One God, and that those of understanding may take heed.
