1
Nun. By the pen and what they write!
-
2
You are not, by the favour of your Lord, a madman.
-
3
And indeed for you is a reward that is never cut off.
-
4
And indeed you are of a great moral character.
-
5
So you will see, and they will see,
-
6
which of you is the one afflicted [with madness].
-
7
Indeed your Lord knows best who has strayed from His way, and He knows best those who are rightly guided.
-
8
So do not obey the deniers.
-
9
They wish that you would compromise, so that they would compromise.
-
10
And do not obey any contemptible habitual swearer,
-
11
a fault-finder, going about with slander,
-
12
a preventer of good, a transgressor, a sinner,
-
13
cruel, and moreover of doubtful birth —
-
14
because he has wealth and sons.
-
15
When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the ancients."
-
16
We will brand him on the snout.
-
17
Indeed We have tested them as We tested the owners of the garden, when they swore that they would surely harvest it in the morning,
-
18
without making any exception.
-
19
Then there came upon it a visitation from your Lord while they were asleep,
-
20
and it became as if reaped bare.
-
21
And they called out to one another at morning,
-
22
"Go early to your crop, if you would harvest it."
-
23
So they set out, whispering to one another,
-
24
"No poor person shall enter it today upon you."
-
25
And they went early, determined [to withhold], thinking themselves able.
-
26
But when they saw it, they said, "We have surely lost our way!
-
27
No, we have been deprived!"
-
28
The most moderate of them said, "Did I not tell you, 'Why do you not glorify [God]?'"
-
29
They said, "Glory be to our Lord! Indeed we were wrongdoers."
-
30
Then they turned to one another, blaming each other.
-
31
They said, "Woe to us! Indeed we were transgressors.
-
32
Perhaps our Lord will give us something better than it in exchange. Indeed we turn in hope to our Lord."
-
33
That is how the punishment comes — yet the Hereafter's punishment is greater still, if only they knew.
-
34
Indeed for the God-fearing there are Gardens of Bliss with their Lord.
-
35
Shall We then treat those who submit like the wicked?
-
36
What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
-
37
Or do you have a scripture in which you study
-
38
that you shall have whatever you choose?
-
39
Or do you have oaths binding on Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that you shall have whatever you decide?
-
40
Ask them which of them will vouch for that.
-
41
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they are truthful.
-
42
On the Day the shin will be laid bare, and they will be called to prostrate, but they will not be able.
-
43
Their eyes downcast, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be called to prostrate while they were sound.
-
44
So leave Me with whoever denies this message. We will lead them on step by step from where they do not know.
-
45
And I give them respite. Indeed My plan is firm.
-
46
Or do you ask them for a payment, so that they are weighed down with debt?
-
47
Or is the unseen with them, so that they write it down?
-
48
So be patient for the decision of your Lord, and do not be like the companion of the fish when he called out while he was in distress.
-
49
Had not a favour from his Lord reached him, he would have been cast onto the barren shore while he was blameworthy.
-
50
So his Lord singled him out and included him among the righteous.
-
51
And those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the reminder, and they say, "He is surely mad."
-
52
But it is nothing but a reminder to all the worlds.
